The Face Lift
The procedure known as the face lift, or rhytidectomy, is very common but also misunderstood. The main purpose of rhytidectomy is to remove the outward sign of the aging process namely wrinkles and excess, sagging skin that results from the natural loss of collagen over time. It is important to understand that while face lift surgery is effective in achieving a more youthful appearance, it has limitations.
What rhytidectomy won’t do is completely change your appearance; if you feel that your nose is too large or that you have a weak chin, a face lift will not change it nor will it completely stop the normal aging process. In fact, you have probably heard about celebrities who have had numerous face lift operations and who ultimately start to look as if they are made of thin, stretched plastic. Old age is not for sissies, but most of us are ultimately going to get there; a face lift can at best hold it at bay for a time, but it will not stop it.
Face lift surgery is effective when it comes to the treatment of the creases along the nose and extending to the corners of the mouth, creases below the eyes, and jowliness that results from the loss of cheek muscle tone. Rhytidectomy can help tighten loose skin that give the appearance of a double chin and can reposition fatty deposits that can give your face a fuller, more youthful look.
It is also important to understand that this is in fact a surgical procedure. Non-surgical treatments such as botox or collagen injections will not provide the same results. However, it may be worth your while to explore some non-surgical treatments before considering a complete face lift.
You are a good candidate for a face lift if you are a non-smoker in good overall health and are realistic about what rhytidectomy can and cannot do. This is another important issue; face lift surgery will not change relationships in your life. It may change the way new people respond to you in the beginning, but the best indeed, the only reason to consider rhytidectomy is to please yourself, not others.
