What to Consider when Visiting the Unit before the Short List Is Made
Within the post advert itself doctors will be invited to get hold of a member of the section to find out a bit more about the post. If you have never worked in the infirmary or section before it makes sense to discover a bit about both and therefore you can arrange to have a look around the section during a pre-short listing visit.
You will evidently need to make an appointment and not just turn up and say “I’m Here!” If the post is a competitive one then it could be possible for 50-100 applicants to all turn up and say “I’m Here!” which would cause chaos for the unit. Some sections will routinely decide to not allow candidates to visit, unless they have been shortlisted.
So the intended outcome for the pre medical interview shortlisting visit (!) is for you to learn if it is even worth you applying to the section for a post. However, do not be fooled into believing that the visit won’t be used to evaluate you as well. Be well groomed so that you can use the visit to sell your skills to the section and make a decent first impression.
It is said that certain medical units even go to the point of discounting any candidate who has not been troubled enough to visit the unit prior to shortlisting - so it will unquestionably pay you to make the endeavour to visit the unit prior to your consultant interview
