Lasik surgery is becoming increasingly popular among individuals struggling with vision problems. Providing people with a way to toss out glasses and contacts, lasik surgery offers complete vision to those who have lived their whole lives on those mechanisms. Still, there are things to consider, including how the surgery works and the dos and don’ts of lasik eye surgery aftercare.
How the Surgery Works
Lasik eye surgery is not a long process. In fact the FTC explains the procedure only takes 10 to 15 minutes per eye. During the procedure, a small flap is cut and lifted away from the eye. The tissue of the cornea is then reshaped by the laser and then protected by a plastic or metal shield.
What You Should Do After
Another important element is taking your medication as described by the prescription. If you need help with drops, ask for it. Wait the appropriate length of time as described by your doctor before you continue with your regular activities such as work. Lomas Eye Care adds that you should wear eye protection during the nighttime to keep anything from bumping or scraping the eye. Drink adequate water to keep hydrated.
What You Should Avoid After
There are many, many things you will want to avoid after your surgery. The first of these is rubbing your eyes. Do not, under any circumstances rub your eyes. In addition, avoid driving until your vision is completely clear and focused. In addition, the Federal Trade Commission also recommends that you keep away from hot tubs and swimming.
Keep away from strenuous physical activities, especially one that could cause eye injury. Also do not exercise for a week after the operation. In addition to these things, you should keep away from smoky, dusty areas and refrain from wearing eye makeup.
Conclusion
Lasik eye surgery can change a person’s life, and in most cases healing time is relatively quick. But this time can be made easier if individuals follow the dos and don’ts listed above. If you follow your doctor’s instructions, you are much more likely to heal without complications.

With so much concern being shown regarding the Bird Flu situation we are all asking if modern medicine can save us from what could become a human pandemic.
Unfortunately it would appear that this is most unlikely, as the World Health Organization has explained that although modern day medicine has improved tremendously over the last decades a pandemic, such as bird flu, presently could result in 2 million to 7.4 million deaths globally.
It was expressed on their website, that hugh demands would be made on local hospitals for many millions of outpatient visits and possibly 1.5 to 5.2 million hospital admissions in the high income countries alone which account for 15% of the worlds population.
It has been recorded that the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918 to 1919 killed an estimated total of 40 million people from around the world and we are ever present of what possible tragedies can happen as highlighted by the 2002 to 2003 SARS scare which killed an astonishing 10% of those infected and was only barely prevented from becoming a global pandemic.
Unfortunately with the world becoming a smaller and more easily travelled place the possibilities of a world pandemic such as bird flu is becoming more than a possibility to occur in the coming years.
Unfortunately today the world has progressed to a situation that is ready to foster a global outbreak, such as a bird flu pandemic, and is quickly becoming virtually defenceless against such a tragedy becoming a real life situation.
The world seems to be ill prepared for such a tragedy, as bird flu, with no vaccines apparently available and no distribution network system in place for such an event.
It would appear that it would be in each person’s own interest to prepare individually to prevent their own weakness to catching such a virus, as bird flu, and an obvious solution would be to investigate natural anti-viral foods, nutritional supplements and herbs that may offer a powerful medicine to overcome these ever looming threats.

Senior citizens are an ideal age group for medical alert bracelet use. Medical alert bracelets for seniors are available in a wide array of materials. More so, these bracelets are vital in the event of a medical emergency.
Medical alert bracelets for seniors are vital. If an elderly person has a medical emergency, paramedics and other professionals can easily identify medical alert bracelet and note important medical information. For example, a bracelet may specify a diabetic’s information, or simply note that the person is diabetic. Medical alert bracelets for seniors speak for senior citizens when they may not be able to directly relay their medical history to a paramedic. In addition, if their family member who knows their medical history is not present at the time of the emergency, the medical bracelet can easily report that information.
These bracelets are ideal for senior citizens with Alzheimer’s, dementia, diabetes or a heart condition. Any condition is reason enough to take this important medical safety precaution. Especially when they travel and are not at home with their familiar doctor, a medical alert bracelet is a must-have item.
The key to getting senior citizens to buy and use these medical alert bracelets is to have a son, daughter or other loved one initiate the purchase if the senior citizen has not or is not willing to do so. By gently bringing up the matter, and letting the senior citizen know that medical alert bracelets for seniors are imperative for the child’s peace of mind, many senior citizens will be receptive and order the bracelet. Some senior citizens may need to be reminded not to take the bracelet off, or to put it on at least when they travel and are not at home. Children of the elderly, home healthy aides and other caretakers should take special precaution to make sure the senior citizen knows how important it is that he or she wears the medical ID bracelet.

There are no hard and fast figures which represent a normal
blood pressure. And very often doctors and other experts cannot
even decide between them what an ideal blood pressure range is
for an adult.
However it is usually agreed that somewhere between 110/70 and
125/80 is considered to be an average blood pressure for a grown
person, though someone with naturally low blood pressure may be
closer to a range of 100/60
A blood pressure of 140/90 is considered to be high, though as a
person gets older, this falls into the more normal range for
people.
Blood doesn’t circulate in an even stream around the body, but
travels in a constant series of spurts. Therefore the pressure
peaks in the blood vessels just after a heart beat and then ebbs
until the next one. This is a continuous process.
The two blood pressure figures represent the pressures when the
forces are at their peak and at their lowest ebb. The stronger
the arteries are, the more they resist the force of the blood
and the lower the blood pressure.
As a person gets older, and the elasticity of their arteries
weakens, the figures tend to rise. However the lower figure
should still be under 90 until that person at least reaches
their sixties.
Many studies looking at blood pressure in both black and white
people have found there is a higher prevalence of hypertension
(High blood pressure) in black people than there is in white.
This has led to further research in determining whether this is
racially determined or just based on socioeconomic and dietary
factors.
Some people suffering high blood pressure may find they just
can’t pinpoint a cause for their problem. They may be fit, have
a very healthy lifestyle yet their blood pressure remains
consistently high for no apparent reason. This is called Primary
or essential high blood pressure. However if the raised blood
pressure is due to an underlying medical problem, it is known as
Secondary High Blood Pressure.
Nearly one in four people in the Western world have high blood
pressure. Many people don’t appreciate it is a dangerous
condition that can lead to a heart attack kidney failure or
stroke if it is left untreated. Yet there are thousands of
people unaware they have high blood pressure who are walking
around with a lethal time bomb ticking away inside them.
Guide to Blood Pressure, low and high blood pressure and
treatment.

In recent times there has been a tremendous upsurge in the popularity of drugs amongst teens and young adults. A new culture of “club drugs” has emerged within the bar, rave and nightclub scene across Europe, The United States, Australia and other wealthy nations. The club drugs of choice are:
-MDMA (Ecstasy)
-Rohypnol
-GHB and
-Ketamine
These drugs offer relatively cheap highs and their pill form make them easy to consume and traffic. Most of these drugs are usually used in high doses and are easily capable of causing spikes in body temperature (malignant hyperthermia), leading to muscle, kidney and cardiovascular damage.
MDMA (ECSTASY) is a synthetic, psychoactive drug and stands for methylenedioxymethamphetamine. There are various other street names for this drug such as; beans, hug, love drug, XTC and Adam, but ecstasy is the most common name. It offers the user a stimulant and hallucinogenic affect and has properties like that of both amphetamines and LSD. It is most common in pill form due to the ease of use although it can be injected, snorted or used in a suppository form.
Psychological complications directly attributed to the use of MDMA include:
-Confusion
-Depression
-Sleep Problems
-Anxiety
-Paranoia
Physical problems include:
-Muscle tension
-Involuntary teeth clenching
-Nausea
-Blurred vision
-Faintness
-Chills or Sweating
The use of MDMA has also been linked to brain damage, primarily affecting the parts responsible for memory, pleasure and critical thought. Obviously due to the unregulated nature of the drug, the contents can vary greatly and also the concentrations. The use of this drug has grown tremendously in the past ten years if emergency room figures are anything to go by. In 1994 only 250 cases involving MDMA were reported but that figure has swelled to 2,850 in 1999 and continues to grow steadily.
ROHYPNOL, GBH and KETAMINE are all used to depress the central nervous system. These drugs are almost completely tasteless and odorless as well as being colorless. This lends the drugs to being used as “date rape drugs”, a use that became more common during the 1990’s. Much like MDMA, these depressants have grown enormously in popularity over the past ten years. The side effects can include:
-Loss of motor skills
-Amnesia
-Seizure
-Nausea
-Hallucinations
-High Blood Pressure
-Depression
These drugs have the potential to be particularly dangerous when mixed with alcohol.
