Customer service refers to a person or a desk, which is set up to give general assistance to customers. Success of any company or business lies in the hand of their customers. Once a customer is satisfied with the company, then company will be in good profits. It is only our customer who put down or up the reputation of the company. Advertising is aimed chiefly at getting customers to go to a particular business. Once a customer has arrived or satisfied, it is important to provide him or her with an excellent customer service experience. A good customer experience results in repeat venture to the same business. Providing good customer service is important to a company because it keeps their customer coming back and helps to build new customer business relationships. Every customer expects after sale service and assistance on particular product, which he or she has bought from the company.
Customer service is the most important difference between your company and competitors. Only those companies can survive who gives good customer service. For example, you visit to a bank for opening an a/c, if that bank doesn’t give good customer services like Debit-cum-ATM card, Auto Invest Account, Internet Banking, Phone Banking, Anywhere Banking, Standing instructions, Nomination facility, Doorstep service etc. then that bank will loose its customers. So it is very important to get good customer relationship. Techniques for managing in a customer-service environment include revisiting strategy, processes, organization, motivation, and incentives, as well as conducting research to find out what the customer actually wants. Every compnay should understand that what a customer is looking for. One should never try to win arguments with the customers, even if you are right and the customer is wrong. These days most of the companies claim to treat customer satisfaction as an important issue. There should a proper training to employees for customer care service. Whether you are in retail business, eatery or other business, there are number of ways in which to deal with both pleased and unhappy customers so they may receive the basics of good customer service and return willing to do business with the establishment again and again.
Training is necessary in order to maintain good customer service and to keep up with the ever-changing trends of the service industry while adding to the basic building blocks of friendly and efficient customer service. Despite all these efforts, it is still argued that many organizations are not good at service and that large organizations in particular are frustrating for the customer to deal with.
Every company should commit to provide its customers with a high standard of service. In the event of not meeting customer’s expectations, company should like to hear from customers. By letting company know when customers are dissatisfied with company service, customer gives company the opportunity to resolve their particular issue and to improve company service for the benefit of all the customers. So to grow faster companies need to manage their customers efficiently.

The transition from 2004 to 2005 has been electrifying. The international ramifications of the deaths of so many people, and the wrecked livelihoods of multitudes of survivors, has brought about an international outpouring of concern and aid in the wake of the massive earthquake and tsunamis that destroyed the coastlines of many nations in the southeast Asian region. This response, even toward an area of the world which of late has exhibited antagonism toward Christians and Jews, is encouraging, amazing, and comforting. The outpouring of concern, aid, funds, and love, reveals the truth that those who have grown up in nations that traditionally adhere to Judeo-Christian ethics understand the value of human life, and willingly desire, and are even compelled, to help others in need, even if the majority of those affected do not hold the same ideologies or religious affiliation. Even those who do not adhere to Christianity or Judaism within many nations have caught the urgency, and are willingly giving of their resources to assist in the clean-up and rehabilitation. It seems all mankind has been mobilized by this event!
Therefore, as often has been historically demonstrated in such disasters, in the midst of tragedy, God’s love, grace, and mercy are extended, and many people find themselves willing to listen to the gospel message.
However at the same time, many still ask, “Where is God?” “”If God indeed exists, why do tragedies occur?” Or we hear sentiments such as, “A loving God would not let this happen! Therefore, God either does not exist, or He is a big bully! He certainly does not live up to His loving reputation!” So man’s perception of God is directly challenged. In the minds and hearts of many, since this disaster was caused by natural phenomena rather that either man-made political strife or misplaced idealism, God is singled out. After all, someone must be responsible! In the desire for explanation and justice, there must be a perpetrator to accuse. Therefore, for lack of any other suspect, God is blamed!
The questions and accusations cannot, and should not, be dismissed. Rather, we must realize these are honest cries of suffering humanity, revealing frustration and anger at the apparent injustice of such obviously tragic devastation and loss of life. But, was the earthquake and resultant tsunamis an “act of God?” The answers are neither a simple “yes” or “no.”
Is God really the perpetrator? Can we pin this “crime” on Him? And, is mankind totally exempt of any “blame”in the face of natural disaster? Is this actually a “crime?” Or is it simply nature out of control?
Obviously, the planet we live on has its imperfections, or earthquakes and tsunamis, volcanic activity, storms, avalanches, mudslides, and other natural disasters, would never occur. God created this universe and everything in it, and He pronounced it all “good.” Therefore, why is it so terribly flawed and dangerous?
God Himself is the essence of “goodness.” He therefore is not the author of evil. But He also does not dismiss evil as inconsequential. He is the God of righteous justice, and as such, impurity cannot dwell in His Holy presence. Rather, He requires justice be done. In this life, this justice takes the form of natural consequence of the curse. In that sense, the rigors of justice do come from His hand. But He does not create evil. Evil entered in the form of deception and disobedience to His directive, therefore, when mankind sinned, the perfect balance of this natural world became tainted with imperfection. All creation fell under the curse. The curse is not an evil itself, rather it is a consequence of the evil. This curse has plagued all creation ever since Adam and Eve sinned. So yes, mankind, by reason of his fallen nature, must take some of the responsibility for natural disorder because of sin, and yes, God’s justice plays a part also.
What sin unleased is not the anger of a God who chooses to bring about punitive measures against innocent victims. Rather, natural disasters are the on-going evidence of a cursed world. In this world both righteous and unrighteous, young and old, innocent and criminal, fall under this curse that fell upon the earth. God does not sit in Heaven and decide to zap areas of the planet out of a vendetta against humanity. Rather, as in the case of this recent disaster, mankind has again come face to face with the reality of the curse portrayed through unbalanced natural phenomena. But God did not institute the curse upon all creation and simply leave it to wreak its devastation willi-nilly.
What is truly amazing is the fact that in God’s prophetic program to deal with the sin of mankind, He has provided a plan of salvation which will bring those who truly repent into perfect communion with Himself, and ultimately, He will restore even the natural elements of “Paradise Lost.” The curse will eventually be removed. But He also must allow the course of nature to totally unfold until all His prophetic word is complete. Why? Could He not just reverse the curse? Yes. But He must also give mankind the chance to choose to repent. Imperfection, death, and flawed nature, came about as a consequence of man’s choice. But mankind has been offered, through Jesus Christ, the opportunity to choose to be restored to fellowship with God. Otherwise, God would indeed be unjust, and mankind would be relegated to the role of robotic pawns to be manipulated at will, and man could accuse Him of being a tyrant.
The righteous and innocent have nothing to fear from natural phenomena such as the recent earthquake and tsunamis, because this earthly life is not all there is. Mankind is an eternal being. Natural physical death is not the end. It is the unrighteous who have reason to fear, because they too are eternal, but face perpetual separation from God — the Second Death in the Lake of Fire. Therefore, natural disasters remind each if us of the fact that our personal eternal destiny is of paramount importance, and that each person will one day stand before the Righteous Judge. Jesus Christ, through His shed blood atonement on the cross, has made provision for the curse of sin and death to be lifted. Each then has a choice to either accept or reject His provision. This world will come out from under the curse, but meanwhile the course of fallen nature will continue until all is fulfilled. Is God an angry, despotic, unforgiving God? No! In spite of, and in the midst of disaster, He has offered mercy and deliverance, not just for the natural existence of this life, but more importantly, for eternity!
“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” I Corinthians 15:22.
“For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now, And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.” Romans 8:22,23.
The eternal destinies of those who lost their lives must be left in God’s hands, because He alone is the Righteous, yet merciful, Judge. Did God turn a blind eye to the disaster? No!! Rather, He knows each victim by name, and His love and mercy are extended and exemplified through those who administer relief and aid.
So, can we blame God for this recent natural disaster? Dare we ascribe either evil intent or abject indifference to the character of Almighty God? Absolutely not! To do so is to cloud our understanding of who He is, and of His great love and mercy, and His desire to reconcile man and all creation to Himself.

Who owns our natural resources? Why the people are so poor and desperate in rich Lake Victoria Basin
Lake Victoria (Nyanza as called by local people) is the second biggest Lake in the world and the father to Egyptian riches, 40 years ago it had over 320 old fish species; now it possesses only eight species1 It’s basin is potentially the riches region in East Africa and occupied by so poor people, it’s environment in such deep criss1 Why?
The Lake’s resource wealth is further increased by the fact that its soils are among the most fertile in East Africa. The varied and rich cultures of its peoples, its breath taking scenery and abundant wildlife and the thorough vastness of the Lake make it potentially a prime tourism destination.
Factor in region’s capacity for agricultural variety output, industry, hydro- electricity, the gold and other mineral deposit in such places as Tarime, Serengeti, Musoma, Geita and Kahama in Tanzania, and Macalder in Kenya. And again, you are looking at the richest region in East Africa.
Yet,
The people of this great Lake; the Luo, sukuma, Haya, Baganda etc. are among the poorest in the world. Official statistics put poverty level at an average of 49% of East African population. Malnutrition is wider spread, high child mortality, protein deficiency in this protein rich Zone. Add to this, the economy, social and environmental cost of the deadly HIV/AIDS, whose incidence in the Lake world and a stern picture begins to look very sad.
There are many activities taking place daily in and around the lake: agriculture, Fishing, Irrigation, Mining etc. But all in vain! The people remain poor amid all riches; they are yet to enjoy the fruits of being granted with this golden prize. Most are blaming their governments for not implementing effective strategies towards the basin development.
Waste in the Lake Victoria basin is a two-way highway.
*Flowing down into the Lake is the waste and high population generated upstream and taken through by twenty big feeder rivers (10 in Kenya, 6 in Tanzania and 4 in Uganda). All these and other smaller ones drain their contents into the Lake, taking with them the same severe disease.
Untreated sewage from municipalities, rural towns and village, toxic effluent from industries and sediments (which is carried in huge tonnage daily)
All East African countries are the major contributor to the lake pollution but are doing the least about it. Because of lack of sewer, treatment works; largely unregulated agro industries dump untreated effluent into the rivers or direct into the Lake. Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers find their way into the Lake without forgetting the entire weight of village’s waste, which also rolls down into the rivers ending their journey into our precious Lake. And to crown it all, the water from the lakes is used directly for-domestic consumption.
The fish species have disappeared due to the quality of water in the Lake and around the shoreline, where most of the
Fish would breed in the littoral zone. The water hyacinth, which was first noticed in the late 1980’s, has also been a big threat. And the other reason is the introduction of the Nile Perch (the vocacious carnivore).
*Leaving the basin, flows the regions wealth; for all of it’s problems, however, the lake basin also contains immerse natural wealth. It sustains the largest fresh water fisheries in the world. It’s waters are rich fishing grounds, so rich in fact that the agents of various foreign owned fish processing companies riding daily in fleets with truckloads of the lakes wealth. Landing points are always overcrowded with incoming trucks, leaving contented. On each departure, their trucks are taken with the lakes harvest, belching smokes and fumes of dead fish. Of the huge tonnage from the points around, the local residents are left with the dried skeletons of processed fish for their meals; eating fish by the lake is luxury! There is a lot of money going out leaving the fishermen poor; they sell their catch at throwaway prices because they cannot store it. (Their prices go as down as USD 0.25 per Kg which fetches USD 6 in Nairobi/Mwanza markets after being processed into fillet and at least fetches twice on the international markets).
The regions challenges are enormous; waste and poverty make awful bed fellows and have spawned and evil child; debilitating culture of dependency. Such altitudes indicate the extent to which many feel that they have lost out a stake in managing their own resource. Poor Lake Victoria’ you are no longer the PEAR OF AFRICA.
HOW TO ACHIEVE TRUE HAPPINESS:
Person’s life is full of wealth; gold and all types of minerals are found in MAN. Unless you dig for them, you cannot possess true happiness.
” Happy are the pure in heart; they will see God” So goes the gospel (Mathew 5:8). Have you ever stopped to think of who decides on your happiness life in the world? Is happiness God made or chance? Can a person create his happiness life? You and you alone are in control of your life direction you can drive your self to true happiness or to rags! But in order to be happy, one needs to concentrate on happy thoughts.
People always ignore the compliments paid to them by others, yet dwelling on unkind words for weeks. They tend to remember compliments for only few minutes or so, but do not forget insult for years. By so doing, you become garbage collector who carries around trash thrown long years ago. You will have to suffer the consequences if you ever allow your mind to be occupied by bad experience.
Remember, you being in control of your own mind (heart), you should make happiness and joy the center of your world. These are always within you; all you have to do is to be sure you are connected with this place inside you. Then build your life around joy.
When you are triumphant, you can be creative because you become open to new Ideas.
For those who were thinking that they could not create their happiness and had given up stresses, I console them and tell them that all is not lost; they still have time to have renovate happiness and be successful if they comply with the following gateways.
*RELAXATION: This is very important for joy and peak performance. As you relax, your metabolism comes into balance. You say yes for the defeat and start afresh, and by so doing you become laid back and happy.
*CRITICISM: This is a useless act, accomplishes not any positive results. Do not do it to yourself or others. Thinking negatively about your self-challenger or other people is the greatest cause of limitations in our lives. Never moan, groan and grouch to any one who will only listen, but do to a person who can do something. Complaining to irrelevant person will only add to your stress.
*NEGATIVE THOUGHTS: This kill, like HIV/AIDS, negative thinking is a killer; it affects the mind, body and emotions. Your thoughts create your physical reality. If you don’t get rid of negative thoughts, expect negative results such as withholding, dislike, poverty, poor image, unhappiness and misery.
*EDUCATION: This like the ocean, it has no end. Educate yourself and be armed with knowledge. Learning is lifelong experience; get it from older people or those who have succeeded and ahead in the game of life.
Read books, newspapers, watch TV, the Internet etc. You still have time for this since it’s the key to good life.
*CARING ONESELF: Love yourself and take care of your body; you live once and for good! Make sure you care for your self if you want to live a long and fulfilling life. It is your own task; no one else can do it for you mind your diet, hygiene and exercise for your physical and mental fitness. Feel and look good by working on your body. Laugh so as to make all kinds of wonderful things happen to benefit your body and mind. Get yourself at ease and be relaxed; the more relaxed the less pain you feel.
*CREATIVITY: Life itself is creation, so this is the best time for you to create whatever creative nature you instead for. Work hard and be contented with your work. Build your family by working hard. Choose a paying and legal carrier, enjoy your work and make sure you are not enslaving your self for working for the sake of money.
*COMPLIMENTS: Pay full attention to the people with huge egos. They always have strong desire for recognition; yet have little concern for those around. They do not give compliments but thrive for!
You should realize that it’s healthy to acknowledge a work well alone. Have a self-respect and integrity and keep your word. Cure all kinds of disease affecting your happiness and harvest best results such as love, caring, good health and success in you life. This relies on your self-ACT NOW.

Is It Time For Solar Energy To Get Hot?
By Tim Phelan
Solar energy has been around for quite a while and most people don’t think about it much except for the ones who are already into renewable sources of energy. Environmentalists have always loved the idea of solar energy but what has kept it from going more mainstream, being more widely used and looked upon as something someone wants to spend money to install on their property? There have been improvements in the technology of solar energy, but has there been enough? Isn’t the war on terror and the desire to be independent of foreign energy sources enough to persuade people to use solar energy? At what point will solar energy become the great and never ending source of energy many of envisioned many years ago?
Well, I, for one, think that the time has just about come for solar energy to really take off because of one reason: it will be economically the right and smart thing to do.
Last year I was driving to Las Vegas from San Jose and when I was just about three quarters of the way to my destination I passed a sign that said something about a “solar farm.” I glanced over and saw row upon row of solar panels sitting in the middle of the dessert. This is about the only farm that could survive in the dessert I thought to myself. Then I thought ” Wow. Why can’t I do that?” In a smaller fashion of course because of my limited resources. But I thought why not rent some land and buy some of these panels and start my own little farm? It made sense and actually it still makes sense to me.
I went home later and looked into the solar energy industry. I wanted to see if this was possible now and I thought if these people put all those panels out in the dessert and sold the energy to others why can’t a small businessman?
Well, what I found out is that it isn’t quite possible to do just yet. Why? Because the cost of the panels, property, labor etc.. wasn’t low enough to make a profit for what you can sell the energy for. The solar farm was more than likely subsidized by the government. So I looked into the possibility of using them on homes. This thought has been around for decades and you do see the panels on more homes than you used to so I was wondering if this was possible now. I found out that it just takes too long for the average consumer to get their investment back to consider putting solar panels on their homes.
The average time for a homeowner to get the money back on their investment is anywhere from 12 years to 20 years. For this industry to take off that figure I believe will have to go down to around 5 to 7. Not that far really. It could actually go below that.
Three things have to happen for the solar energy promise to become a reality and for homeowners and entrepreneurs to decide in large numbers to use solar panels to create electricity:
1. The price of the panels will have to decrease.
2. The panels will have to improve and produce more energy.
3. The cost of energy will have to increase.
Actually just one of these factors can happen to a great degree and the other two stay constant and the point will be reached where the solar energy industry will explode. But more than likely, all three will come closer together and at some point people will decide to start buying the panels in record numbers and we will see this way of creating energy from a clean and renewable source be common place.
Here is why I think the time is very near for this explosion to happen.
1. There is a bill in the state legislature in California now that will spend $billions on rebates for solar energy. The governor wants to show that he is in the front of this movement and wants to be aggressive. Some don’t like the way the bill is written, but there is a good chance it will pass.
2. The panels are becoming more and more efficient at producing more energy.
3. The price may go down dramatically if contracts with China to produce the panels are put into place. Normally I don’t like our jobs going oversees to people who only get fractions of what the US worker makes but in this instance it will also create many jobs here to install the panels, sell them, warehouse them etc… Plus this is something the country needs I feel. Clean, renewable energy that makes us less reliable on foreign oil and gases.
Also, some companies are producing these new generation flexible solar energy panels that come in sheets and can be rolled up and then out onto surfaces. These may bring the cost way down and make the instalation much more easy and cost efficiant. Here is an article about this new product:
At what point will these three variables merge?
I predict in the next two to three years this industry will take off like so many of us were hoping it would many years ago.
If you want to know how to install a solar electric panel system to your house here is a inexpensive e-book that shows you how.
People can act now, and many already are by buying and installing these solar panels. With the war on terror looking like it could last decades many look upon this investment as not only a clean green solution and a smart investment on increasing the value of their home, but as almost a patriotic gesture in a way to free us from the dependence on middle eastern oil and natural gas. Here is a link to a terrific site where you can get these panels at wholesale prices. This site has all sorts of renewable energy sources at great prices.

Happy Earth Day to everyone!
(255 words)
What can you do to make a difference - pick up a copy of our book, Trash Talk, & we’ll show you a myriad of simple ideas to reduce consumption of resources & new ways to manage your contribution to the landfill. (okay - forgive us for the little plug!)
Just the other day there was a group of children walking down our streets downtown with bags cleaning up the area. We could all learn from this selfless act. Did you know that wind and traffic breezes carry waste from inland to water ways? Up to 80% of the waste found in water ways originates inland. Something to think about…
There are all kinds of things we can do today, starting right now that make an immediate difference: choose to walk or bicycle to your destinations or bring home a tree or other environmentally beneficial plant that produces food, cleans air, water and soil or prevents erosion. Look around your home and office. Are you managine waste and energy as efficiently as you can? How about stand-by power use? This is the power continually consumed by flashing lights and power lights (on appliances, stereos, computer equipment and so on) when equipment is not in use. Unplug these power drains today.
Yes, these are just little things, but they do make a difference. Earth Day is about awareness - it is about engaging individuals to make a difference. Pretty soon it is like ripples in a pond, the waves just keep getting bigger.

In lieu of recent, tumultuous occurrences, people are more compelled than ever to discover the mystery of these modern-day, earth-changing events.
One day, Earth is experiencing the fourth largest earthquake in a century - a 9.0 tectonics plate shift off the coast of Sumatra, the next day - Tsunami.
A Report from NASA explains how the poles have permanently shifted by an entire inch. According to Dr. Benjamin Fong Chao, “…Any worldly event that involves the movement of mass affects the Earth’s rotation, from seasonal weather down to driving a car.” Per the findings of Doctors Chao and Gross, the North Pole has shifted by an inch in the direction of 145? East Longitude. Based on their report too, was that Earth’s oblateness (gravity field) was also decreased by a small amount.
To translate into laymen’s terms, the change in mass distribution can effect long-term global climate changes; (See here for more info) thus, the El Nino/La Nina effect is strengthened due to unusual mean sea level pressure.
The Journal of Geophysical Research published an abstract on data analysis from the Earth’s gravity field. In their profound study, results showed that Earth’s gravity field has undergone significant variations during the past 28 years alone. The largest (of these fluctuations) occurred during the 1996 - 2002 time frame. Again, we have a scenario of mass redistributions in the atmosphere and ocean in a relatively short period.
Personal research from the National Earthquake Information Center showed that between December 5, 2004 and January 5, 2005 there were over 170 earthquakes across the globe that measured over a 5.0 (on the Richter Scale).
According to the Volcano Information Center, 77 volcanoes have erupted or are experiencing ongoing eruptions since 2002 - 2004; of which, 57 began erupting during 2004 alone.
The recent California Mudslides, the torrential downpours, and extreme winter precipitation begs one to try and comprehend what exactly is occurring and why it is happening at this point in time. Once again, we return to the statement made by Dr. Benjamin Fong Chao, “…Any worldly event that involves the movement of mass affects the Earth’s rotation, from seasonal weather down to driving a car.”
Based on this analogy, we can clearly define that magnetic field composition and movement can and does affect global weather (on a broad scale). But what other effects can the magnetic field have on the planet as a whole?
Interestingly enough, I was able to retrieve different reports that may somehow involve magnetic field proponents: In February of 2004, `…over 10,000 Bramblings dropped dead in a `bird rain’ in the Eastern Province of Jiangsu - Yangzi,’ as reported in the BBC News. In addition, in November of 2004, 100s of Whales and dolphins were found stranded off the coast of Tasmania and New Zealand (Australia Broadcasting Corp ). Reporter Jocelyn Nettlefold stated, “…The weather appears to be central to the stranding cycle. Every decade or so, atmospheric changes bring cooler, sub-Antarctic waters further north…” Professor Mark Hindell further elaborated, “…there have been suggestions in the past that seismic exploration may have been associated with strandings in the US…”
In a more comprehensive Article from Progress in Physical Geography, Sudden Climate Transitions during the Quaternary, Scientists found that the `…time span of the past few million years has been punctuated by many rapid climate transitions, most of them on time scales of centuries to decades or even less…’ and `…Judging by its past behavior under both glacial and interglacial conditions, climate has a tendency to remain quite stable for most of the time and then suddenly `flip’; at least sometimes over just a few decades, due to the influence of the various triggering and feedback mechanisms…”
This, in relation to magnetic pole shifts would inevitably and theoretically explain dramatic climate transitions. Since 1990, surface waters in tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean regions became markedly saltier, while at the same time, much of the water column in the high altitudes of the North and South Atlantic Oceans became fresher. See Report: New Study Reports Large-scale Salinity Changes in the Oceans
My own theory is as such: Seismological Events = Polar Shifts = Climatic Changes = Global Warming = Sea Level Rise = Continued Seismological Events = etc., etc., etc. In other words, seismological events brought on by nature or manmade contraptions, is the beginning of a vicious cycle.
To further fuel the debate of greenhouse effects directly attributed by sea level rise, `Glacial Melt Alarms Scientists,’ as reported by Terry Rombeck of Journal-World, Prasad Gogineni (Kansas Univ. Researcher) stated, “…I don’t think sea-level rise is an immediate concern. You’re talking about the long term, 50 or 100 years. But the assumptions we’ve made are based on gradual increases over 100 years. What we’re seeing are dramatic increases.”
Overall, the Earth, as we know it is inconceivably changing before our eyes. It is still not too late to make our own transitions in how we proceed with this newfound knowledge. The key to scientific research and global climatic/geological phenomena is that we, as human beings, have the inevitable power to implement strategic changes that can ultimately reverse or at least slow the effects of our own ability to inhabit this Earthly plane. In so, the solution lies within us all. The only difference between mankind’s survival and mass-level extinction is whether or not we choose to use the solution.

Cottonwood “cotton” is flying/ Bad Company
Thomas Leo Ogren
I originally saw the question below posted in an Internet gardening forum and decided to answer it. It was a question I’d been asked many times before and I knew my answer would be useful in an article on springtime allergies caused by city trees. So I saved it to share with you here.
“Does anyone else here really suffer from allergies when the seeds of
Cottonwood are flying? I KNOW it is not the cottonwood but I am really
curious as to what is pollinating at the same time.”
Diana Pederson, Ingham County, Michigan, Zone 5, United States, author of Landscaping With Bible Plants:
That’s a very good question.
Around here, as the “cotton” (the seeds) of the female poplars (cottonwoods and aspens) and the willows is flying about, so is a good deal of pollen from different, unrelated species of trees. It is very common at this precise time that many people are suffering from extreme bouts of hay fever and often it is this “cotton” that gets the blame. Some city arborists refuse to plant female willows or poplars because of their firm (if mistaken) belief that this “cotton” is really some kind of pollen. But it isn’t pollen; it is seed. It is NOT what is causing the allergies at that time.
By the time the seeds of the female willow and cottonwoods are flying, pollen from the males of these two species is already spent. However this flying of seed coincides with pollen release of many allergenic plants.
Out West this is the same time that the millions of urban “fruitless” male mulberry trees are shedding their highly allergenic pollen. It is also the time that the olive trees are starting to release pollen. The cypress trees and shrubs are releasing very large amounts of pollen at this time too, as are the many male Ailanthus trees. At or about the same time the walnut trees are releasing a large amount of pollen, as are many species of hickory, butternut, and pecan. Perhaps the most pervasive at this point are the oaks, many species of which are still at this time covered with staminate flowers and just loaded with pollen.
At the same time that the female willows and cottonwoods are releasing all that harmless fluff into the air, the birch trees have just finished shedding large amounts of pollen, much of which is still lying around on the ground. In southern areas the alders often bloom twice (as will many birch and junipers) and the second bloom of the alders sometimes will coincide precisely with the flying of the “cotton.”
Also to take into consideration is that by the point in the year when the cottony seeds of the willows and poplars starts to float about, most of the male maples and male ash, and a large number of other trees and shrubs have already released their own pollen. Unless this pollen was washed away by strong downpours of rain, much of it is still lying about, and is still causing problems, weeks or sometimes even months after it was released.
To add to all of the above, at precisely this same time, the grasses start to release pollen. The ornamental landscape clump grasses all produce huge amounts of pollen at this time, as do most bluegrass species, bentgrasses, Bahia grasses, and especially Bermuda lawns that have not been kept closely mowed. By the way, the newer hybrid Bermuda grasses are sterile and pollen-free, but not the old common Bermuda lawns by any means.
By the time this poplar and willow “cotton” is in the air, many people with allergies are already starting to suffer from “systems overload.” There is so much pollen being released and so much just previously released, that it overwhelms the immune systems of many individuals. The result of course is allergy.
The sad thing about this whole affair is that all too often these female willows or female poplars, female cottonwoods, female aspens, they get blamed for the pollen from the male trees and then people cut them down! Since female trees have flowers that are electrically charged negative - (their roots are grounded) and since pollen from male trees picks up a positive + charge as they tumble about in the air, the two are mutually attractive. Female trees are powerful air cleaners, air scrubbers. Every female tree that is chopped down makes the air in that neighborhood that much more allergenic.
We need to protect our females!
