Climber from Nepal, 74, oldest person to reach the summit of the Mount Everest. His first found him within 228 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. One year later, Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Chomolungma to finish what he had started.

Min Bahadur Sherchan and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

“Mt Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Min Bahadur Sherchan returned a hero to Calgarians. The Chinese were flying their airplanes over Mount Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. “The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Chomolungma or Mount Everest. They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

Nevertheless, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Andrew Brash with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. More than 3272 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. The 77-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Chomolungma.

The benefits of explosive strength training for rugby football

Rugby football involves prolonged physical engagements between
players where they are subjected to loading substantially
greater than their own body weight. An ability to very rapidly
generate force is advantageous in these areas of physical
engagement. In addition to basic strength training, players need
to undertake activity-specific training for explosive strength.

Unlike other forms of football, rugby can be usefully viewed as
a succession of prolonged physical engagements, either between
individual players or between groups of players. Each of these
engagements demands the exercise of substantial physical
strength. While basic strength training should form the
foundation for such engagements, there should also be a focus on
developing explosive strength appropriate to the particular
activity.

During the extended periods when players are physically
contesting with their opposing counterparts they are continually
subjected to loading substantially greater than their own body
weight. And, because that added resistance is live, there is
often the problem of overcoming not only inertia but also
counter force triggered by an initiating movement

In modern rugby considerable attention is given to fitness and
aerobic conditioning as well as basic weight training, but there
is very limited focus on the development of activity-specific
explosive strength. This is despite the fact that an ability to
very rapidly generate force can yield a competitive advantage in
each of the areas of physical engagement in rugby:

Scrum and maul In the scrum or maul situation it is very
difficult to shunt the opposing pack backward unless there is
synchronised explosive activity. If a pack begins to move
forward slowly or if just one or a couple of players attempt to
initiate a shove, they are unlikely to be able to overcome the
inertia of the opposing pack’s body mass. In addition, the
attempted drive forward will almost certainly trigger an almost
immediate counter-shove. On the other hand if a pack suddenly
and explosively begins to drive forward as a synchronised,
coordinated unit, they are likely to be able to generate
momentum and place their opponents on the back foot.

The key elements are that each of the forwards possess basic
strength and a capacity to rapidly generate force. However, it
is essential that their movements be synchronized. If any of
these elements of strength, explosiveness and synchronicity are
lacking the attempt is likely to prove futile or even
counterproductive.

Tackle In a tackle situation there is great advantage in
forcing the opponent, whether ball-carrier or tackler, back from
the line of engagement. In order to do this effectively, the
action has to be both powerful and virtually instantaneous.

In addition, ball-carriers with explosive leg drive are often
able to brush past attempted tackles, while tacklers with
similar attributes can forcefully secure the ball-carrier and
take him to ground.

Ruck At the breakdown of play following a tackle the
ability to push back or “clean out” opposing players from the
ruck offers opportunities to win the contest for the ball or at
least put the opposing team in a disadvantageous situation. The
only effective way to win the breakdown contest is to apply very
considerable force in an explosive manner.

Lineout The outcome of the lineout contest is largely
dependent on how high the jumper can ascend, but also on how
rapidly he can reach that point. This requires not only a very
good vertical leap by the jumper, but also the ability of his
support players to forcefully elevate him. Both jumping and
lifting require specific forms of explosive strength.

When forward packs are evenly matched in strength and technique,
and defensive techniques are well-coordinated, a game of rugby
can often become a war of attrition, with teams attempting to
wear one another down over the course of the game. It is very
difficult to maintain concentration and alertness throughout an
80-minute game, and a capacity for explosive action allows the
exploitation of fatigue and inattention. It provides surprise
and unpredictability, while limiting the possibility of
appropriate reaction.

Strength training for rugby should always be grounded on a solid
foundation of basic strength; but coaches who are seeking to
gain a sustainable competitive edge would do well to incorporate
a comprehensive program of activity-specific training for
explosive strength.

Exercises for golfers may seem like an oxymoron, but I’m here to
tell they are most definitely not. Golf is physical! Golf causes
injury! Golf can very easily break down the body! To hit the
ball maximum distance, your body has to have a higher level of
golf specific strength and flexibility.

The above statements are fact.

To play your best golf you need to implement exercises for
golfers as soon as possible. The sooner you start, the sooner
you will see results on the course.

So what’s the difference between going to the gym and plopping
down on machines and doing exercises for golfers?

First off…do you sit when you play golf?

Then why would you sit in a “controlled” machine thinking it
will improve your golf?

Golf is “on your feet” and in a dynamic position (golf posture).

Because the demands for golf are so unique, you need to approach
your golf improvement from a different angle than just going
into a gym and thinking it will help your golf game.

Exercises for golfers doesn’t just mean strength exercises.
You’ve got to do golf
stretching exercises as well.

Whenever I hear a golfer say he/she needs to stretch more…my
first thought is “they are missing the boat”. Golf stretching
without golf
exercise is not permanent flexibility.

Here’s an example for you.

Stretch a rubber band. Now stretch it more and more. What
happens to the rubber band? It gets brittle and eventually
breaks.

Picture your muscles just like that rubber band.

The winning combination is golf exercise and golf stretching .
This will give you the best results.

When putting together your exercises for golfers program, take a
look at the body position required to make a mechanically sound
swing.

Once you realize this dynamic and very unique position, you can
do golf exercises specific to this position.

Things to remember.

* Do the majority of your golf exercises on your feet. * Do them
in your golf posture if at all possible. * Keep your knees
flexed, just like your golf swing. * Do as many rotational
exercises as possible. * Make sure to do the follow through side
of the swing. * Do a high enough repetition to promote golf
muscular endurance.

Exercises for golfers can be fun and keep you motivated to stick
with your program. Adherence is the main culprit for lack of
results. Like any fitness or weight loss program, if you don’t
do it consistently you won’t see the results.

Staying motivated by picturing the “end-result” on the course
will be a huge help. Envision you on that first tee a more
powerful and fit golfer. Picture blasting your drives by all
your playing partners. And lastly, paint a strong visual of you
having the lowest score consistently when you play in your
normal golf groups.

Who Will Win The Fifa World Cup?

Many people, including myself are starting to look forward to the world cup of football. The question many people are asking is who is likely to win the tournament? In this article, I give my own viewpoint on this subject and discuss some of the likely contenders (teams) who could win.

The world cup finals are being held in Germany and it promises to be a very exciting and entertaining event. The tournament which only takes place every four years is in my opinion the biggest sporting event which takes place. It means everything to all of the players taking part as well as to the supporters.

Potential winners of the football world cup

Germany

The hosts Germany are always a big threat in the world cup and have an outstanding record in the tournament. The team seems to peak at just the right time and as they are playing on home soil, they must have a great chance. I personally believe though that Germany will be knocked out in the quarter-finals. I think that their best player is Micheal Ballack.

France

The French team have had an outstanding decade and still boast some of the best players in the world. Players like Henry can turn a game in an instant and he is just one of a few players which I could mention.

France should do well but I do not believe have enough to win the tournament.

Holland

I must say that Holland are one team which I love to watch playing football. They approach the game in the right way and their supporters make it a very colourful occasion.

Despite having many top players, Holland always seem to flatter to deceive and this could well be the case this year.

If my home team of England does not win the world cup, I would love to see the Dutch lift the trophy.

Spain

Spain in a way are very much like Holland in that they always seem to fall short despite having many superb players.

On their day the Spanish team can beat the best in the world and should come close this year.

I personally believe that Spain will be knocked out in a penalty shoot out, this is what normally happens to them.

Portugal

After just failing to win the European football championship, Portugal with their Brazilian manager Scolari, will be hoping to go one better in the world cup. It came as quite a shock when Greece beat them in the Final two years ago and this defeat might play on their minds when the pressure is on.

England

Being from England myself, I am obviously hoping that my home nation can lift the trophy for the first time since 1966.

England certainly have enough talent in the team but something always seems to go wrong.

Wayne Rooney has the potential of being the best player at the world cup and if he can stay fit, England will have a great chance.

I personally believe that the English will be eliminated in the semi-finals.

Italy

The Italians have a number of superb footballers but my only concern for them is that they do not always play as a team.

I believe that they should have won a lot more tournaments over the last twenty years and I do not think that they will win this year either.

Brazil

Brazil are by far and away the best team in the tournament. This is my tip for the team which should win the Fifa world cup.

To win the tournament you require something a little bit special and Brazil certainly have that.

The only way I can see them not winning is if they have a bad run of injuries or a series of red cards. Both of these are highly unlikely.
